Choosing A Ghostwriter

When you choose someone to write your story, here are some things to keep in mind:

Every Ghostwriter has a unique writing style.  Make sure you get a sample of their work to see if their style will fit your own style.  Look for phrases, terminology, dialects that match your own speaking dialogue.

Never work with a Ghostwriter without first drawing up a contract and a non-disclosure agreement.  Both of these documents (which can sometimes be seen combined into one) are for YOUR protection.  While the Ghostwriter will invariably add ideas of their own to your ideas, the original premise is yours.  Unless you specifically wish to share the credit with your Ghostwriter, you need to be sure your thoughts and ideas are protected.

Be prepared to be in constant contact with your Ghostwriter.  Even if the process takes months, you and your Ghostwriter should have contact information for each other so the flow of ideas can move back and forth with ease.  A Ghostwriter who cannot be reached is probably not working with your best interests in mind.

On the flip side, even Ghostwriters suffer from "writer's block."  If that is the case, your Ghostwriter should have been in contact with you immediately to discuss changes in project timelines or to pick your brain for ideas. If they have not, giving them the benefit of the doubt is okay for a day or two, but if they are missing deadlines and making no attempt to contact you, it may behoove you to take your story to someone else.  (Be sure to refer to your contract before moving your project to someone else, as many contracts also protect the Ghostwriter from runaway clients.)

Beware project bidders who bid too low.  You do get what you pay for in the writing world.  However, beware those who bid too high as well.  Using a sample piece to see a bidder's work will help you weed out scammers from both ends of the spectrum.

Some of the best Ghostwriters have degrees in related fields.  However, many do not.  Many of the best Ghostwriters started simply because they love to write and are creative enough to turn other people's thoughts into imaginative works of art.

Most Ghostwriters DO NOT proofread or edit their work to publishing standards.  Be prepared to hire a separate Editor, or to do that portion of the work yourself.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding hiring a Ghostwriter, I would be happy to assist.  If you would like to hire me for a project, please review my rates and contact information.

Good luck on your writing endeavors!
